New Excavations in the Western Desert

Funds are required to continue the important excavations started by a joined team from the SCA and the German mission assigned in Egypt. The results were evidence of inhabitation in the area that was a rainy area some 5 thousand years ago. That area is actually known as the Great Sandy Sea and is located southwest Egypt near the borders with Sudan, Chad and Libya. A survey was led around El Mahareik hill and in Gara cave. Tools and diorite instruments were found there together with stoves, human and animal bones and few stone utensils. A relevé of the cave was practiced and decorative and geometrical designs over the walls drawn. Garara Valley where the site is located is rich in evidence important enough to retrace signs of life in the area during Ancient Egyptian lifetime. Farouk Hosni, Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Supreme Council to whom the matter was raised will spare no efforts to help scholars in their important works.
