Dr. Mohamed El Saghir
Head of the Pharaonic and Graeco-Roman Antiquities Department
Dr. El Saghir, assigned in 1997 in that important position to safeguard, preserve and conserve Egypt's heritage, has a long carrier that started when he worked from 1963 -1973 as an Antiquities' inspector in various areas: Sakkara, Giza, Helwan. He witnessed the salvage of the Nubian monuments as a resident archaeologist in Nubia; this led him to the position of Chief Inspector in East Delta then Director of Upper Egypt from Giza to Aswan as from 1983 to 1993.
Dr. El Saghir, born in Sohag, Upper Egypt in 1939, studied in Cairo University, got his BA in 1962, M.A 1976 and Ph.D. from Assiut University where he teached as a half time professor in Sohag Faculty of Arts. He is member of many Egyptologists International and Local associations and committees. He supervised the work over different sites in Egypt and in 1995 was the Chairman of the Committee assigned to prepare the location of the New Egyptian Museum at Giza plateau and the Chairman of the Committee Establishing the Mummies in The Visitor's Centre in Luxor.
Dr. El Saghir participated in different International exhibitions: Thot Ankh Amun treasures in USA 1977, The Golden Pharaoh in Japan 1985, and The Glory of the Pharaohs in Japan 1990.
These qualifications and large experience led him to be decorated as Commander from Greece President in 1977 and Honorary Citizen of New Orleans City Council, USA 1977. He attended many IAE congresses and was invited as a lecturer in different International Cities, which led him to participate in the Egyptian Days of the Embassy in India held in the occasion of the 50 years independence celebration of India. He faced the audience as a lecturer in different Universities and organizations in India while in Belgium he participated in the Symposium of the Theban tombs. This large carrier was hardly earned by Dr. El Saghir, as it is the result of a conscientious work. He discovered in 1978 Komir Temple south of Esna, the Nilometer in Luxor Temple 1979, an ancient Theban district Aboul Goud, Luxor, 1984-1995 a great part of the processional path of Thebes and Luxor Temple cachette in 1989. Different restoration works has been done under his direction all over the Upper Egypt's area.
Dr. El Saghir, prominent head of Egyptology Department in SCA, has many publications, to mention some The Discovery of Komir Temple, The Papyrus and Lotus In Ancient Egyptian Civilization, The Funerary stele of Dibi, An Anthropological examination of Human skulls found in Tarif, El Qurna etc.
Many papers and achievements are the richness of Dr. El Saghir who devoted himself within the SCA to the Egyptian heritage. He is one of the most brilliant employees who works in silence with efficacy and devotion.
