Historical Cairo

Under the patronage of  Mr.President of Egypt, The Supreme Council of Antiquities together with Cairo Governorate and the Ministry of Utilities and  Habitation are undertaking the responsibility of a long-term project that includes all monuments located in El Muez Le Din Allah street and  Fatimid Cairo.Work in this great project  had already started in some areas.

 The purpose is to clear the important  street from any misuse of the monuments  and soon are to be admired Bayt El Sehaymi and El Darb El Asfar, Wekalet Bazaraa, El Hakem Mosque…. And many other important monuments we shall point out to when restored.

Misr El Kadima Monuments

Restorations were applied to the Hanging Church built over two towers of Babylon Fort known as the Candle Palace that is also under restoration together with the Ancient aisle of the Coptic Museum. SCA had set the amount of 25 million EGL for this project and follow meticulously the growth of work.

El Zaher Beibars Mosque

Columns supporting the iwan ceiling is restored especially columns located in the northeast iwan. Semi-precious stones were offered by Kasakestan to be used as ornaments to the mihrab. El Zaher Beibars was one of the prominent Mamelouks who accomplished many achievements.

Kalaoun Complex to be studied for restoration. The restoration project is in its preliminary stage as studies, relevés, plans…all related steps are taken to accomplish the project due very soon. Sultan Kalaoun, Mamelouk period, had erected many important monuments considered as unique artistic buildings. Egypt during the Mamelouk reign had enough funds to erect exquisite artistic buildings still standing in their original settings.

Gamal El Din College

This is a group that consists of a mosque and a college erected by Gamal El Din El Ostadar. Studies, relevés and plans are prepared to start the restoration project very soon.


Northern Walls of Cairo

Walls used to surround Cairo. The remaining parts located in the northern side around Bab El Fettouh and Bab El Nasr are actually restored, cleaning stones and missing stones replaced with blocks carefully selected. Excavations are practiced near the walls for further details and studies.

Undocumented Inscriptions recorded

American University in Cairo assigned Dr.Bernard O"Kane and his efficient team to cooperate with SCA in recording the undocumented, unpublished and deteriorated inscriptions in the registered monuments referred to Islamic Period.

Several Mosques under restoration In Cairo

SCA Islamic Department is actually undertaking the responsibility of restoring several mosques located in Cairo namely El Aroussy Mosque, El Dashtouti Mosque, Hassan Pacha Taher, El Kadi Yehia, El Mass El Hageb…and others

Deir El Paramouth and El Serian, Wadi El Natroun

Located in the western side of Lower Egypt, the two deirs are actually under restoration within the plan of SCA to restore few monuments located in Lower Egypt. Wadi El Natroun is a fertile area known by its quiet and unpolluted atmosphere as well as the fertile soil. The area includes five deirs.

Ali Beck El Kabir Project, Tanta

This project consists of dismantling and replacing after restoration of the wooden ceilings. The ground floor will be specially treated, as it needs isolation work. The roofs will be isolated too. Ali Beck Sabil located in Tanta will be surrounded by an open-air museum practiced in the garden and utilities buildings. Completion and opening of the project is due soon as Mr.Abdallah El Attar, head of the Department will announce in due time.

El Abbassy Mosque in Rashid

Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the Rosetta branch of the Nile, Rashid has a great historical importance as the city witnessed many historical events. Rashid is reach in monuments some referred to Mamelouks others to Islamic periods. Restoration of El Abassy Mosque is almost terminated and the opening of the project is to be announced soon as it included the electricity net, the restoration of the minaret and the dome…
