New Discovery
A survey of the Mediterranean coast reveals an Ancient Harbour and the wrecks of a
Sanken Ship.
The SCA archaeologists started a thorough survey of the eastern coast of Alexandria after the successful salvage of part of the Napoleon's Sanken Fleet. The result of this activity revealed an ancient harbour, 200ms L. 100ms l. Located in El Maemoura, the harbour refers to the Roman period. Amphoras full of oil and wine were found there together with a 30 ms L wooden form representing the wrecks of a Roman ship.
Dr.Gaballah A.Gaballah proudly announced that this discovery is the result of the SCA employees' efforts that benefited out of the constant training they are getting. These efforts are part of a large plan to survey the coasts in order to discover more evidences related to a very important era in the Egyptian history.
Alexandria, located on the northwest side of Egypt and built by Alexander the Great witnessed the prosperous reign of the Ptolemés and the Roman invasion. This important period left behind many unique monuments to be admired not only for their architectural values but also for what they represent. The Hellenistic art is the combination of the Greek art with the Ancient Egyptian that lasted for almost three centuries. Alexandria has still a lot to reveal mainly and may be Alexander the Great's tomb.
